Music – Today we bid farewell and adieu to November and note that this date has some interesting history for music lovers. And as cold weather arrives we consider the commonalities between ice and music. Motown rules and Randy Newman documents the American experience.
I LOVE Randy Newman - the King of deadpan humour.
Unfortunately my sound was all broken up today so I didn't hear the ones you selected [not even enough to know which they were!] but maybe when I get home from a long day in the big city I'll be able to play something of his..
"Boom goes London, Boom Paree" would fit my mood this morning!
Thanks for the reminder!

Or - Harry Nilsson's - what a sorry place this would be!

What a wonderful post RFE..........many thanks
Without question, Motown changed lives - unfortunately, at the time I was living just a few miles away from the Motown magic, as a kid, I was totally unaware of what was happening. I just knew the sound was unique. And now thanks to RFE, I know who helped make that sound so lasting. Happy Birthday Randy!
Randy Newman has shown the, way a lot of this country feels and dares to express it. That is why I like him. Black-eye-peas is a real message and that is what songs are about. Keep on going Randy!
Grew up (as much as I could) in Motown. The sounds of that city influenced my drumming considerably. One of the nicest things anyone ever said about me was in a review in the "Detroit Metro Times". It stated that 'the strains of a "Motown Revue" could be heard in the background of one of our performances, and there is no wasted motion in the rhythm section either...' then it went on to mention some names.
Personally didn't listen to much of Randy's music. There is so much music out there. Now that you've mentioned it, I'll give it a closer listen. Thanks RFE!
Few genres of music remain constantly popular. You can go to any party now or in the future and a Motown track will not be out of place. Motown truly spans the generations. In fact it was only last week i was in the UK and had the honour of seeing a sell out of the Four Tops and the Temptations (or should i say, due to illness and death, Four Top and Temptation).
Motown ain't Motown without the 'Temptations'

Best post all week ... thanks
Thank you for posting this RFE.
Thank you Motown for bringing us:
Chuck Berry, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Night and the Pips, Harold Melvin & Blue Notes, Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, The 5th Dimension, The Delfonics, The Platters, and The Temptations.
Without the popularity of those earlier acts we probably would never have heard of:
Kool & the Gang, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Bill Withers, Billy Paul, Earth, Wind & Fire, Freda Payne, Roberta Flack, Sly & the Family Stone, The Hues Corporation, The Isley Brothers, The Ohio Players, The O'Jays, The Spinners, The Stylistics, The Staple Singers, Tina Turner, Tower Of Power, and War.
Cont'd
Without the pioneers of the early days of Motown we may never have experiences the progression of music into these artists:
Brothers Johnson, Carl Carlton, Chaka Khan, Donna Summers, En Vogue, Gloria Gaynor, Midnight Star, Morris Day & The Time, Prince, Rick James, Rose Royce, Salt n' Peppa, Taste of Honey, Tavares, and The Commodores.
Early Motown has made a profound impact on music and effected the development of Rock n Roll the most. You can hear the influences from the soulful sounds of the Beatles to Led Zeppelin. Thank you Mr. Gordon.
Nice lyrics and nice songs

Who could say that they disliked the Motown sound? It may have been a bigger step towards racial harmony than people realize as well. And Randy Newman is not only one of the great American Songwriters but may be it's most acerbic wit as well!
Berry Gordy added color to a lot of very bland lives. Motown was the arrival of White people into the land of Oz, in living color!
