Music – A Spadecaller video interpretation of Donovan's song celebrates the real Hurdy Gurdy Man. The Maharishi, spiritual advisor to the Beatles and many others, introduced the Transcendental Meditation movement to the West in 1959. He died at his Dutch home in Vlodrop on February 5, 2008.
This cult has taken over a little town in Iowa that I live in.
Here are just a few true examples of this cult: They destroyed a college north of town they purchased, to build india-type shacks that have east entrances...For good "Karma". They bought a farm north of town and built a city (Jonestown comes to mind)with their own printed money & have been trying to steal farms from local farmers who just happen to have the misfortune to be located close to them! Here is the best one: They believe they can fly...I swear!!
But hey they are easy to confuse, which is kinda fun I have to admit..lol
("They bought a farm nort of town and built a city...")
What cult? And who are "they"? You have no idea what or who you are talking about. Do you even know what TM is?
Apparently you hate people who do not share your religion and who do not have the same complexion that you have...

Millions of mainstream Americans and people around the world have learned TM from a certified teacher who studied the Maharishi's methods. It is not a cult ... and drugs are frowned upon by those who practice TM.
Your prejudice and ignorance is glaring and hopefully you may someday be able to address this and get over it. Too bad you feel the need to spread it.
Spadecaller,
Do you meditate in a golden dome like they do in Fairfield, Iowa...Do you have to get an enema before you meditate, Do you believe you can fly??? They meaning Maharishi University Of Management students do all of this!
I do know what TM is and when not affiliated with mock college, (they are not accredited by the way!)I believe it is a very sound practice. And In FACT they don't condone drug use NOW, but they did when the Beatles met them. Read a book pal, I suppose you attend this cult is the ONLY reason you are offened.
"Apparently you hate people who do not share your religion and who do not have the same complexion that you have." Actually I have no religion. You see I have these things called "thoughts", which keeps me from believing in invisible and imaginary people. Your nescient, brainwashed mind may have trouble comprehending that.
Spadecaller,
All I see you rebuke is DRUGS??? I guess to bilk innocent simpletons like your brother and yourself is totally fine huh?? Not to mention trying to steal farmland...and lets not forget the fact that you Whiz-kids believe you can Fly while meditating! Good gravy Margaret, they are saner people locked up in the bug-house! Go jump on your magic elephant and go back to Oz!

Regarding the origins of the song, Donovan recently explained:
"I was intrigued by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's teachings of transcendental meditation, which were also followed by The Beatles. I went with The Beatles and George's wife, Patti Boyd, Cynthia Lennon and Jane Asher to stay with the Maharishi in the Himalayas for 3 months. For a while, Mia Farrow and her sister Prudence, shared the bungalow next to mine. She inspired John Lennon to write Dear Prudence. Hurdy Gurdy Man was influenced by the sounds I heard there."
"The important thing is this: to be able, at any moment, to sacrifice what we are for what we could become."
-- Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
"The Maharishi, spiritual advisor to the Beatles and many others" Uh.. Their drug dealer would be more accurate. He introduced the Beatles, Steve Miller, Donovan and others to LSD, and tried to get them to become part of his cult along the way. George was the only Beatles that was truly sucked in. However these folks are/were true believers: Mike Love, Doug Henning, David Lynch to name a few. you might ask why the Maharishi needs such rich and famous folks to join his cult?
Simple, to be a "true believer" you must donate 1/3 of your income to this Idiot! Jim Jones would have been so proud!!
Hurdy Gurdy Man.....close description, Flim Flam Man would be better suited.

My older brother and I personally knew the Maharishi and you are full of it. He never advocated the use of drugs; to the contrary he promoted TM only, as the best means to get high naturally.
It's a shame that you feel the need to falsely lump a bunch of people together and then spread it around as if you actually know anything about which you claim.
Yes finally someone who see this clown for what he truly was!!
