Music is many things to many people, what it is not- is static. It lives and evolves. And like the music itself, the means through which it is distributed are also in flux and perhaps never more so. And what is change? Let's have a look shall we?

We have all observed the shifts and convulsions in the music industry in recent times. The old models have become irrelevant, but what will the new model look like? It appears a consensus is developing! We can grasp where this is going now, and musicians themselves seem to be defining the new distribution parameters, at least to a degree. In Europe Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno have done much to shape the industry and empower musicians everywhere. Last.fm is adopting the outline defined in the "Magniicent Union of Digital Downloading Artists" or "MUDDA". A manifesto distributed by Eno and Gabriel to engage the people creating the music in shaping the model for it's distribution.

Oh yeah, and that video of David Bowie doesn't hurt either!

Though the article documents inevitable changes in the music industry, perhaps the parameters can be applied to most everything. If we don't change, we don't survive.

Bowie is one of the best, his music and stage shows, also his willingness to promote or help those that intrigue him, ie. Mott the Hoople, Iggy Pop etc.

One thing I see missing in todays music is the little history notes that usually went on the backs of album covers, or the artists that played back-up, now adays one has to open a CD to read up on the disc that is if anything is on it at all.

Marc Knoppler is another with such collaborations with, Chet Akins, Emmy Lou Harris ( excuse the spelling)and many others, it is great to see and hear.

      Great submit RFE !!!

Good stuff, RFE. The need to adjust the sails is more than evident. This seems to be a great way for everyone.

FTA- Change, as a positive notion, is a continuity of sincere effort to release and let go of inefficient thought patterns from the past. Change is the agency of transformations and of growth.

Some of us change as a result of "seeing the light". Others change only when "feeling the heat".

I for one am overjoyed at the idea of music production being taken away from the major labels. I'm sick of the tripe that we are constantly fed by the major labels. It's nothing more than factory music.

          Good post!

One concern for composers and bands that has not been addressed adequately until now is the fact that people spend time and treasure to create music, when it is downloaded through free file share sites, they get no compensation. The way We3 and Last.fm are addressing the problem allows people to download music for free, (albeit with an advertisement being included, yet after 4 weeks, if they like the music they may download the version without the ad). The advertiser pays the creator. Everyone is happy. There is no doubt that OD2, MUTHA, and the capital investment Peter Gabriel personally made in making We7 a reality is what is pushing the new business model in the direction it's going.

Thankyou Peter, Thankyou Brian, for your foresight and selfless commitment. We are on a feasible road now.
